10. Breathe Again

What a busy few weeks it's been! I hope everyone's had a lovely Christmas and are enjoying the holiday period. I have made a short return to the 100 themes challenge as a break between eating and drinking my own body weight in delicious festive goodies. This was all done with coloured pencils with a little bit of digital editing over the top.

This will most likely be my last post of 2012 and I can't believe how quick another year has gone by! Thank you to everyone who's visited my blog, connected with me via Twitter or just dropped me an email over this past year. Your support is very much appreciated! I have big plans and hopes for 2013 and I wish anybody reading this all the best and a happy and prosperous New Year to you all :)

Daily Doodle

Based on a lady I saw shopping earlier today. I think I have a new found love for drawing big, curvy people.

Christmas Card 2012

...It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

Here is my Christmas card design for this year. I decided to go in a totally opposite direction to the complexity of last year's design and keep it clean and simple, but still festive. Even though it's simple, I feel it incorporates a lot of things I've learnt over the course of this year. Get those trees decorated and the stockings up, it's not long to go!

Yee Haw!

Apologies for the recent absence, I have been completely snowed under with a variety of work from all directions! I can, however, see the light of some free time at the end of the intense work tunnel and I fully intend to update my blog with some of the stuff I've been working on (and am allowed to show!) Until then, here's a sketch of a cowboy. There will be more of this guy to come!

08. Innocence

Here's a quickie to get back into the 100 themes challenge. Number 8 is 'Innocence'...is there anything more innocent than a pudgy newborn baby?!

Rain Booties

Sorry for the recent absence! The reason for this is I've been absolutely snowed under with freelance work over the last few weeks, which is great but it keeps me away from any personal work. Things are easing up now so hopefully I will get back into the swing of things soon!

This was done for Illustration Friday's topic this week, 'Water'. A young lady bends over to admire her booties in the rain as she walks over a puddle covered pavement.

Fishies - Part 2

I picked one of my favourite fish sketches from my previous post and decided to develop him into a fully rendered piece - this is the result! I really aim to do more of this kind of style in the future.

Fishies

These were a lot of fun to develop! This started as a page of very quick sketches done over the course of a day at work during periods of rendering.

Carla the Witch

Original digital version, followed below by (iPhone, apologies!) photos of the canvas print.

Well I would never usually refer to my best friend as a witch, but in this case she really is! This was said friend's birthday gift from me after finding out another of her friends had already got her tickets to the Harry Potter studio tour (my original present); so I thought I'd go for something no one else could get! This was done at a massive resolution which I had printed onto canvas, which was my first canvas print. I think I was just as excited to see the result, luckily it came out really well!

There's not much more to say about this one other than Carla is a massive Harry Potter fan and an even bigger fan of geese and waterfowl (...no, I don't get it either) Thankfully she appeared to be very happy with it :)

Wenlock Pole Vaulting

Here's Wenlock, one of the London 2012 mascots having a go at pole vaulting! If you'd like to know more about Wenlock and Mandeville; their wikipedia page can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wenlock_and_Mandeville

As many of you who follow me on Twitter, or who are friends with me on Facebook, will know; I am absolutely and emphatically loving the London 2012 Olympic games! I have been excited for the Olympics to arrive in my home city for a while but I could never foresee how utterly engrossed I'd become in them and the amazing, indescribable atmosphere it has bought to London. I am lucky enough to have been to the equestrian show jumping (where the GB team went on to win gold the next day), cycling track finals (where Team GB won two golds and a silver!) and the athletics in the Olympic stadium last night. It all ends tomorrow with the closing ceremony and even though I'm very excited for the Paralympic games too, I will be so sad to see this incredible event end an leave our country.

The other side of this means I have had almost no time to myself to draw over the last two weeks, but I'm more than going to make up for it once everything quieten's down here!

Cup O' Doodle - The Bird Man

Another day, another doodle! I love these multi-tonal shapes provided by CupO'Doodle (http://cupodoodle.blogspot.co.uk/). I saw a couple of birds in it straight away and after working away at it I came up up with this character. This is a big departure from my usual style but I really enjoyed it! The original image and an overlay of the image above can be seen below. As always, click to enlarge!

Cup O' Doodle - Little Dino

Another Cup O' Doodle. I'm trying to get back into the rhythm of things by doing some quick, creative exercises. I try not to look at other artist's interpretations of the shapes before I finish my own- It's always great to see the variety of ideas!

07. Heaven

The theme for number 7 is 'Heaven'. I found this one particularly difficult. I'm not a religious person at all and although I like the idea of heaven I don't think it's within my current ability to illustrate what I see in my head. The idea or vision of heaven is also something personal to each person who believes in it in any way. I thought about it for a while and eventually moved in a different direction- I thought of generally what 'heaven' would mean to a majority of people - somewhere full of happiness, calm, peace and without stress, evil or bad feeling.

I started to sketch and came up with this little character. Her name is 'Heaven', she is a spritely, ethereal creature who is the personification of the above elements that make up a lot of people's feelings towards what heaven as a place might be like. I like to think of her as a gate keeper. Obviously her colour scheme reflects warm, happy colours and her (very large!) hair was based on the most basic and reoccurring symbols of heaven - clouds :)

Miserable Day

Today has been a miserable day for several reasons. It's July and it's pouring with rain and still cool enough for a coat in London. I'd like some sunshine please!

Wedding Gift

Sorry for the recent absence, I've been in Paris for a week and spent last week catching up with all manner of things I've missed! If you follow me on Twitter (@LaurenScotty) you may remember before I went away a couple of weeks ago I was working on a personal piece. I can now reveal that it was for some friends of mine, and a couple of wonderful people called Ash and Tia who got married last week.

This was my wedding present to them. I knew I wanted to make a poster of some sort to commemorate their special day but initially I didn't know whether to go with a more playful, colourful circus style poster or this more subtle 1920's black and white style. I decided that this style might have been a better, and more versatile, choice if they like it enough to hang it in their house! We bought a very nice quality A3 size print and a lovely black wooden frame with a shiny, silver border to mount it in.  Luckily they were very happy with it :)

06. Break Away

A quick one to finish off the working week on this balmy Friday night. When I thought of 'Break Away', as a theme, I immediately thought of freedom. You don't get much more carefree, and freedom from any kind of worries, when you're a dog and so I based this one on my Siberian Husky.

...I'd like to say the physical exertion and playfulness is also based on her but it's currently 28C in London and she spends most of her time lounging in the shade in the garden.

05. Seeking Solace

Whether you're going through a tough patch, life's getting on top of you in general or you've just had a bad day I think most people would agree that your bedroom is the ideal place to seek solace. I know when I'm stressed or I've had a crappy day sometimes the best thing to do is to climb into bed, close the curtains - and my eyes, relax and sleep stress away.

After all, tomorrow is another day!

Trionfi Visual Development

It occurred to me the other day that I should move some of the huge amount of visual development work I produced for my MA short film project 'Trionfi' over to my blog. If you wish to see more about the production of Trionfi, and the details of the project, you can find the production blog over at: http://trionfifilm.blogspot.com

The final film can be found on Vimeo here:  https://vimeo.com/28930591

Below is a selection of character and environment design work produced in the pre-production stage of the project. After all the design work was collated there were over 80 pages that formed the visual development package for the film.

Also, there is a lot of written documentation on the pages. This was for the benefit of my lecturers grading the project as a university submission. I had to explain my design processes and decisions in a way that showed my process of thinking while working. This will mostly be removed when these designs get put into my portfolio. I wouldn't expect you guys to read through it all!

As ever, click to enlarge!
